It was founded on May 28, 1543, by Francisco de Montejo \u201cEl Sobrino.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city is located where the ancient Mayan settlement of \u201cZaci\u201d (pronounced: \u201csa-kee\u201d) once stood. In the Mayan language, Zac\u00ed means \u201cwhite hawk,\u201d and the area was once inhabited by the Cupules people. Upon the arrival of the Spanish, the lands were divided into \u201cencomiendas\u201d, and the city was placed under the patronage of the Virgen de los Remedios and San Servacio.<\/p>\n<p>During the 19th century, Valladolid gained importance as it became home to Mexico&#8217;s first thread and textile factory, \u201cLa Aurora de la Industria Yucateca,\u201d founded by Captain Don Pedro Sainz de Baranda.
